Living Through the War in Kosovo: Between lived Experience and Dominant Narratives

Abstract:
This study explores how civilians remember and narrate everyday life during the 1998–1999 Kosovo War, with particularattention to routines, displacement, insecurity, family and community relations, coping practices, and moments of normality. It examineshow civilians retrospectively interpret their agency, vulnerability, constraints, and adaptation across different phases of the war and itsaftermath. The study also investigates how participants perceive the dominant public narrative of the war and which civilian experiencesthey believe are recognised, marginalised, undervalued, or omitted within it.
Gëzim Selaci:
She is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Prishtina. His interdisciplinaryresearch spans sociology, political theory, and international relations, with a focus on political legitimacy, state-building. His work hasexpanded to memory studies, everyday experiences of war, and the politics of remembrance, alongside continuing interests in culture,secularism, religion, and social and political movements. He is the author of Political Legitimacy in Kosovo: The Case of InternationalTransitional Administration (2020), and has also co-edited several volumes on culture, power, difference, and critical reading.
