Large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT and Gemini are increasingly present in academic contexts, yet their appropriate use in research and publishing remains unclear for many scholars. Researchers face growing expectations to understand these tools, while also navigating unresolved questions around academic integrity, publisher policies, data protection, and scholarly responsibility.
This workshop will aim to respond to that gap by offering a practical introduction to AI tools, grounded in current publishing practices and ethical considerations.
Objectives
The workshop aims to enable participants to:
· Understand how contemporary AI language models work, and their fundamental limitations
· Develop realistic expectations about what AI systems can and cannot support in academic work
· Explore responsible, transparent uses of AI in research writing and publishing workflows
· Become familiar with publisher positions and emerging norms regarding AI use
· Identify risks related to accuracy, bias, data protection, and academic integrity
· Make informed, independent decisions about whether and how to use AI tools in their own work
