Born in Plattling. Study of Slavic Philology, also in the Soviet Union (Leningrad). PhD and habilitation in Slavic Philology. 1990 to 1994 Professor at the University of Saarland. 1994 to 2018 Professor of Slavic Philology at Universität Regensburg – declining various offers to assume professorships at the universities in Kiel, Münster or Heidelberg.
