The Work of Miloš Martens and the Question of Intertextuality — completed
My project is a comparative analysis that relates the work of the Czech-speaking writer and critic Miloš Marten (1883-1917), who was an initiator between the metropolises of Prague and Paris, to contemporary German, French and English literature. Marten was described in 1917 by the influential critic FX Šalda as an epigone and plagiarist. Marten condemned his work as a "copy of late romantic western fiction", which was one of the reasons for the marginalization of Marten's work. Objectives of the dissertation is 1.) to explain this negative attitude in the literary context of the time and to analyze the so-called plagiarism debate - the critical disqualification of discourses (categories such as non-originality, epigone, plagiarism, imitation) 2.) to present the so-called concretization of Marten's work and the "Marten's paintings" in the history of literature 3.) to provide another interpretation of Marten's prose - "Cyklus rozkoše a smrti", "The cycle of pleasure and death" and "Pohádky a podobenství", dt. "The fairy tales and the parable" 4.) to analyze Marten's works linguistically through individual editorial departments. As a methodological basis, I use the discourse analysis, the impulses of the Prague school and the aesthetics of reception.
Curriculum Vitae
Jana Kantoříková was born in Česká Lípa (Czech Republic). In 2007 she graduated in Historical and Literary Studies at the University of Pardubice (B.A.) and in 2010 she studied Czech Philology at the University of Olomouc (M.A.). She started her PhD at the Charles University in Prague in 2011. Since 2014 she has been doing her PhD at the University of Regensburg as part of a bi-national procedure.
She received a scholarship at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena (WS 2009-2010), attended the University of Leipzig (May-June 2012 as a visiting scholar at the GWZO), attended the Humboldt University Berlin (summer school), at the University of Regensburg (BAYHOST Scholarship, German-Czech Future Fund) and studied at the Paris-IV Sorbonne (Sept.-Nov 2014, scholarship of the French Government). From 2011-2012 she worked as a high school teacher, lecturer and freelance translator. From March 2013 to April 2014 she worked as a research assistant at the Chair of Slavic Literatures and Cultures of the University of Passau. Since November 2014 she has been a member of the Graduate School for Eastern and Southeast European Studies. On October 1, 2015, she started an assignment for Lecturer and Instructor in Czech Studies at the Université Paris-Sorbonne, until 2020. In 2022 she accepted a teaching assignment at the Free University of Brussels and since September 2020 she is also an associate Member of the Research Centre Eur'Orbem: Cultures and Societies of Central, Eastern and Balkan Europe at the Université Paris-Sorbonne.
